There are generally two types of bed designs: platform beds, which provide built-in mattress support, and traditional beds, which require an additional support system such as a box spring or bunkie board.
Platform Beds
Our Shaker, Loft, Mid Century and Greenport beds feature a durable slat roll system that securely attaches to the side rails and center support, providing reliable mattress support. This platform-style design eliminates the need for a box spring or bunkie board. However, if you prefer to use additional mattress support, it will not affect the functionality or integrity of the bed.
- Slat Roll Design: Our slat rolls feature slats that are 2¾" wide and spaced 3½" apart. Additional dimensions covering the full scope of each bed are available on all product pages under the “Dimensions and Assembly” section.
Traditional Beds
Our Montauk bed, with the exception of the twin size, is designed as a traditional bed and requires the use of a box spring or bunkie board for proper mattress support. The bed includes four center support slats that are intended to hold the box spring or bunkie board.
Using the bed without the required support system may result in significant mattress sagging and potential damage to the center slats, center support bar, and side rails. Please note that damages caused by insufficient support are not covered under our warranty.
Most customers pair the Montauk bed with a low-profile support option, such as:
- A box spring measuring 3–4 inches, or
- A bunkie board measuring 1–3 inches.
When combined with a 10–12 inch mattress, this setup provides the same low-profile look featured in our product photos and ensures proper support and comfort.
While we do not sell box springs or bunkie boards directly, and do not have official recommendations, many customers have successfully used similar products such as this available from a variety of retailers.
