At Grain Wood Furniture, we take the health and safety of our customers seriously. That’s why all our products undergo rigorous testing, including checks for levels of VOCs like formaldehyde.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are organic chemicals characterized by high volatility. They are in many organic materials, including dyes and scents. Many man-made products emit some VOCs, but most do not present a particular danger to humans. Like many chemicals, some VOCs can be toxic at high concentrations or have long-term health effects. However, the U.S. government regulates products with VOCs and ensures they fall below a safe standard. This means most consumers have no reason to worry about VOCs in their daily lives.
Grain Wood Furniture ensures all our products test for levels within the safe limits of government regulation. We are in constant contact with the products and their components — from their production to their warehousing — and are wary of any potential dangers related to long-term exposure. We are comforted by the fact that even the highest concentration chemicals are often thousands of times lower in concentration than their known safe exposure limits.
While we cannot avoid VOCs from natural wood, we are actively developing finishes for some of our products that minimize VOCs even further. The finishes for our Shaker, Loft, Greenport, and Mid-Century collections already meet the standards to be called ultra-low VOC emitting products. Additionally, our Shaker and Greenport collections are Greenguard Certified.
VOC FAQ
What are the test results for your products?
We ensure that all of our products are safe for our customers. We have tested our furniture to various government regulations including 40 CFR PART 770 — Formaldehyde Standards for Composite Wood Products, CDPH Section 1350 VOC, and CARB ATCM §93120.2(a) / CARB ATCM §93120.3(d). We have received passing grades for all of these certifications, ensuring our products are safe for consumers and our workers in the warehouse.
Can I have a copy of the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)?
We understand your concern and your request for Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). Because this technical information is intended for professional and regulatory use, it can be easily misinterpreted when viewed outside of that context. For that reason, we do not provide MSDS documentation directly to consumers.
